In my last post (or maybe the one before it) I mentioned my 5K training. Brad and I did our first 5K on a whim back in 2005. It was Knoxville's first "Knoxville Covenant Health Marathon", and when we learned there was a 5K option, we thought, "Why not?" We didn't train at all. I think the day before the event, we got on treadmills to see how far and how long we could run and realized we'd probably have to walk some of it. Apparently the average person can't just decide on a whim to run 3 miles with no training and do it. Huh. Who knew? Anyway, while we were out there, we saw people running the half and full marathons and wondered in amazement why anyone would subject themselves to that on purpose.
Fast forward a few years, and we found ourselves with the running bug. We'd each done a few more 5Ks and decided to train for longer events. I'm getting off track, though.
At the beginning of 2007, I decided I was going to get in the BEST SHAPE EVER for my 30th birthday, and I was going to train for the Knoxville Marathon 5K that would happen on my birthday. And I did it. I worked my hiney off, and I got into amazing shape, and I was SO READY for that 5K, and I rocked it. Here's a fuzzy picture of me finishing strong in 2007 on my 30th birthday. Go me!

This is inspirational, right? Well, yes and no. One of the hardest things that I have to pep talk my way through is the negative comparisons of myself now vs then. My physical capabilities are not what they were 10 years ago, and not just because I'm 10 years older, but also because I'm about 100 lbs heavier. Yeah. BUT! I'm doing it. I am pep talking my way through it and looking for the positives. Like since I started scheduling my workouts, I haven't missed a single one! And even though today was hard because Nora kept interrupting, I finished my workout. I have no idea where this path will take me, but I feel like I'm in it for the long haul, and that feels really good.
Here are some quotes that have brought me inspiration recently.
